2019 Scholarship Recipients

Mia Adams

Mia Adams

Mia Adams of Sioux Falls, is the recipient of a $750 Scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation.Mia plans to attend the University of South Dakota majoring in Psychology with a minor in music. Mia was active in band, marching band, jazz band, pep band playing the clarinet and tenor sax. She was involved in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) and Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) where she was the State Vice President of Hospitality and Chapter Vice President of Retail Operations. She was active in theater in high school and at the Sioux Falls Community Theater.Mia has worked as a dog sitter and at Target.

Wyatt Anderson

Wyatt Anderson

Wyatt Anderson from Canton, is the recipient of a $500 South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation Scholarship. Wyatt plans to attend the Black Hills State University majoring in Marketing, Accounting, or Economics and Finance. Wyatt is active in band, basketball, football and golf. He participates in Being Understanding of Diverse Students (B.U.D.S) which volunteers in places like the nursing homes, the Banquet, and Love in the Name of Christ (Love INC). He is the National Honor Society. And has worked three years as a lifeguard in Canton.

Emma Bader

Emma Bader

Emma Bader of Sioux Falls, was awarded a $500 Scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Emma plans to attend Southeast Technical Institute majoring in Early Childhood. She has participated in the marching band and has over 100 volunteering hours through the Serve and Learn Student Association (SALSA) group. For ten years, she has been involved with Dakota Dachshund Rescue. She has a Junior Black Belt in Taekwondo. Emma has worked for Royal Fork, Leif Erickson Day Camp, Truks and Trykes Daycare, and Boys and Girls Club.

Ethan Dingman

Ethan Dingman

Ethan Dingman from Sioux Falls, is the recipient of a $500 Scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Ethan plans to attend South Dakota State University majoring in Music Education. For two years, Ethan was the first chair in the all state band. He was a section leader and a vocal captain in marching band and choir. Ethan has been a member of state band, show choir, concert choir, chamber singers group, and Dakota Academy of Performing Arts (DAPA) for the past four years. He sings and is a lead in a teen vocal group at church. Ethan works at Schmitt Music.

Alycia Espe-Easton

Alycia Espe-Easton of Black Hawk, was awarded a $500 Scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Alycia plans to attend Western Dakota Technical Institute majoring in Business Management and Technology with a certification in Social Media Marketing. Alycia plays ASA softball. She has been in the Xcel gymnastics since she was 5 years old and is currently a platinum level gymnast. She has helped with the South Dakota Special Olympics and has served meals at the Rapid City homeless shelter. Alycia works at Kohl's Department Store and Berendse & Sons Paint Co., Inc.

Nathan Hansen

Nathan Hansen

Nathan Hansen from Grant, is the recipient of a $500 Scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Nathan plans to attend Alexandria Technical and Community College studying Marine, Motorcycle, and Powersports Technician. Nathan is the Vice President for the Youth Empowerment Through Involvement in Snowmobiling (YETIS) and is active in his church. He has worked at Berens Warehouse and Groceries and at Midwest Powersports, as well as on the family farm.

Tristen Hildebrandt

Tristen Hildebrandt of Mitchell, was awarded the Minnehaha Sertoma $2,000 Scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Tristen plans to attend University of Sioux Falls majoring in Pre-Professional leading to a master's degree in Occupational Therapy. She has been in track and field, powerlifting, a student athletic trainer, Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), sideline cheer, Future Business Leaders of America, basketball, volleyball, and National Honor Society. Tristen is active in her community with Buddy Walk, Special Olympics, Love Feast, Trunk or Treat, and Dig Pink for Cancer Awareness.

Shelby Horan from Canton, is the recipient of a $1,000 Scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Shelby plans to attend Augustana University majoring in Speech Pathology. She participated in dance, cheer, track and volunteers for the Humane Society and Love in the Name of Christ (Love INC.) Shelby works at Subway.

Alex Kolbeck

Alex Kolbeck of Brandon, was awarded a $500 Scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Alex plans to attend University of South Dakota majoring in Accounting. He was a powerlifting team captain, Boys State Delegate, and Lynx Way Leader. Alex played basketball and ping-pong and was on the A-Honor Roll and National Honor Society. Alex volunteers at his church, Habitat for Humanity, Casper's Ghost of Christmas.

Shawnna Lofland from Canton, is the recipient of a $500 Scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Shawnna plans to attend University of Nebraska Lincoln majoring in Biology. Shawnna was in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), art club, and volleyball. She has received achievement awards in chemistry, graphic design, journalism, art and German. Shawnna works at Canton Dental Clinic.

Becca Monson

Becca Monson of Bath, was awarded a $500 Scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Becca plans to attend Lake Area Technical Institute and enroll in the Law Enforcement Program, then go to Mount Marty College to major in Criminal Justice. She was active in choir, marching band, pep band, cheerleading, Empower Youth, and the Aberdeen Explorer program, which focuses on law enforcement. Becca works at Wendy's and Boys and Girls Club as a youth director.

Madelyn Powell

Madelyn Powell

Madelyn Powell from Meckling, is the recipient of a $500 Scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Madelyn plans to attend Augustana University majoring in Nursing with a minor in Spanish. Madelyn was in concert band, pep band, marching band, jazz band, theater, drama, investment, Spanish and in the National Honor Society. She works at Gavin's Point Dam Fish Hatchery and Aquarium and Hartford Steak Company.

Olivia Rogers

Olivia Rogers

Olivia Rogers of Deadwood, was awarded a $500 Scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Oliva plans to attend South Dakota State University majoring in Aviation and Transport. She was active in basketball, track and field, volleyball, FCA, Kiwanis, Key club, and yearbook. She received her academic letter and was 2014-2015 and 2018-2019 Homecoming Queen. Olivia was selected by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to be South Dakota's representative for the Annual Teen Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., for three years and she won first place at local science fair on the study of Cystic Fibrosis and Infection. Olivia received the Lennis Larson Outstanding Speaker Award at Regional "We the People" Government Competition and received a Certificate of Achievement in Ability and Creativity in "In Vitro Biology" at High Plains Regional Science and Engineering Fair. Olivia works during the summer at RCI, construction company.

Brittney Stratmeyer from Rapid City, is the recipient of the Kevin Roth $1,500 Scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Brittney plans to attend South Dakota School of Mines and Technology majoring in Chemistry. Brittney was involved in tennis, swimming, basketball, piano, bass guitar, and she is currently active in 4-H and her church. She co-launched Black Hills Homeschool Prom "Prom with a Purpose" community service project. Brittany is certified through the American Red Cross as a lifeguard and babysitter and is certified in CPR and first aid. She is a certified member of the Pennington County Emergency Management Community Emergency Response Team, a certified Scuba Diver Rescuer, and a certified Department of Public Safety Drivers Education driver. She is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars and has won the State Swim Meet in the 50 meter freestyle and the 100 meter backstroke. She works at Roosevelt Swim Center.

Jaxon Warkenthien of Brandon, was awarded a $500 Scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Jaxon plans to attend South Dakota State University to become a Radiologic Technician. He participated in basketball, baseball and ping pong. Jaxon is an umpire for the Brandon Valley Baseball Association.

2017-2018 Scholarship Recipients

Landon Renli

Landon Renli

Landon Renli of Canton, is the recipient of a $2,000.00 Minnehaha Sertoma Club Scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Landon plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for Speech and Communications Disorders and go on to get his doctorate in Audiology. Landon participated in baseball, basketball, football, quiz bowl, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, SADD, student council, student mentor and was awarded Scholastic Honoree for three years. In the summer, he worked on his family farm, for the City of Canton Summer Youth program, for the Lincoln County Conservation District by planting and caring for trees. He also volunteered for Therapy Dogs International where he trained and certified dogs to visit and bring comfort to patients in the Veteran Affairs, community hospitals, and nursing homes.

Nick Hanson of Mitchell, was awarded a $1,500.00 Sunrise-Sertoma Kevin Roth Scholarship by the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Nick plans to attend the University of South Dakota majoring in Business Administration with a minor in Operational Analytics. Nick is active in soccer, Vice President of Pen Pals, coaches high school intramural basketball, volleyball, and dodgeball. He is also on the Honor Roll and involved with the National Honor Society. He is an active member in his community by volunteering at church, Salvation Army, Good Will, Tanta House, and snow removal for elderly neighbors. He has worked for the City of Mitchell Corn Palace as a concession stand worker, South Dakota Soccer Association as a referee, a bank teller and at cell phone repair.

Genevieve Catrett of Montrose, is the recipient of a $1,500.00 South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation scholarship. Genevieve plans to attend the University of Sioux Falls majoring in Social Work. Genevieve is active in choir, band, one act plays, Teens Against Tobacco Use, and was Vice President of her class. She worked at Good Samaritan Society nursing home as a dietary aide and has volunteered tutoring elementary students.

Jason Mills of Brandon, was awarded a $1,500.00 Scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Jason plans to attend the University of South Dakota majoring in Business with a minor in Criminal Justice. Jason was a member of the high school powerlifting team four years. He is currently a Sergeant in the Sioux Falls Police Explorers which has allowed him to have exposure to police work and volunteer events like Cinco De Mayo, Hot Harley Nights, and various Sioux Falls parades. Jason works at the Brandon Taco Johns as a crew leader.

Bailey Schlotterbeck of Watertown, is the recipient of a $1,500.00 scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Bailey plans to attend Lake Area Technology Institute majoring in Agricultural Education and then to South Dakota State University for teaching. Bailey is active in yearbook, all state choir, school plays, track, volleyball, cheer, and student council. She is very active in 4-H club, receiving many animal showmanship awards. Bailey has been involved with the Humane Society, Future Farmers of America, and Salvation Army Angel Tree. She has served ice cream to the elderly, organized food drives for the PAC program, donated money she won from the SD Crop Improvement Association to the Codington County 4-H and FFA, and has started and sponsored the County Schlotterbeck Ag Award.

Catherine Foy

Catherine Foy of Sioux Falls was awarded a $1,000.00 scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Catherine plans to attend Augie Access majoring in Deaf Education or History. Catherine is a member of Student Against Destructive Decisions, Kids Against Hunger, and Civil Air Patrol doing search and rescue missions. At school, she participated in several talent shows and was a member of the homecoming royalty. Catherine won the South Dakota Optimist Club Communication Contest for Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the South Dakota Miss Amazing Teen Pageant. Catherine works at Walgreens.

Tate Perry

Tate Perry

Tate Perry of Bancroft, is the recipient of a $1,000.00 Scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Tate plans to attend Lake Area Technical Institute majoring in Automotive Technology. Tate is active in church, choir, football, wrestling, Future Farmers of America and 4-H. He also helped plant flowers in the park to clean up the community. Tate has worked on the family farm, in construction, and as a farm hand for a local farmer.

McKenzie Morehead of Cavour, was awarded a $1,000.00 Scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. McKenzie plans to attend Mitchell Technical Institute will enroll in Human Services Technician program. McKenzie has been involved with basketball, drama club, choir and volleyball. She served as the volleyball manager and was a member of the Iroquois Peer Assistant team. McKenzie works at Burger King in Huron.

Wilson Kolbeck

Wilson Kolbeck of Brandon was the recipient of the $1,500.00 Sunrise-Sertoma Kevin Roth Scholarship awarded by the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Wilson plans to major in Business and minor in Finance at Gallaudet University. In high school, Wilson was a mentor in a program called "Best Buddies" and participated in baseball, track, basketball, and football. In a 2016 school-wide mock election, he was elected US President. In the summer, he umpires for baseball tournaments. He also keeps score for the middle school boys and girls basketball games.

Dylan Kortan

Dylan Kortan

Dylan Kortan of Utica was the recipient of the $1,500.00 Sunrise-Sertoma Kevin Roth Scholarship awarded by the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Dylan plans to attend South Dakota State University majoring in Natural Resource Law Enforcement. Dylan is the editor of the Yankton High School Publication "Cellar Door", a member of the high school chess club, and was the Boy's State 2016 City and County Treasurer. Dylan has participated in Boy Scouts since 2007 and was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. He worked at Lewis and Clark Boy Scout camp and currently works at Walmart as a courtesy associate.

Molly Tinklenberg

Molly Tinklenberg of Tea was awarded by the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation a $1,500.00 Minnehaha Sertoma Club Scholarship. Molly plans to attend South Dakota State University majoring in Pre-Med. She has volunteered multiple of times at the Banquet in Sioux Falls. She sang in choir throughout her high school years. She is a nursery school teacher at her church and also works at the Tea Pizza Ranch.

Taylor Hillestad of Lake Preston was the recipient of the $1,500.00 Minnehaha Sertoma Club scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Taylor plans to attend the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Taylor has been on the Honor Roll four years, National Honor Society for three years, and Student Council Officer for four years serving as Treasurer, Secretary, and Vice President. He participated in choir, band, football, basketball, and track all four years in high school. He works in the summers as hired help and as a construction worker.

Cole Trainor of Faith was awarded by the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation a $1,500.00 Minnehaha Sertoma Club Scholarship. Cole plans to attend Eastern Wyoming College majoring in Business or Accounting. Cole played varsity football all through high school and started as the quarterback for the last two seasons. He also played varsity basketball throughout high school and was the starting point guard for the past two seasons. During high school, Cole was involved in the Faith High School Rodeo Club with advancement to the State Finals for the last three years. He is a member of the National Honor Society, volunteer referee for junior high school football games, and is part of the Faith Church of Christ Youth group. Cole has worked on his grandparent's ranch and at his father's automotive part store.

McKayla Stratmeyer was awarded by the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation a $1,500.00 Sunrise-Sertoma Kevin Roth Scholarship. McKayla plans to attend the University of South Dakota majoring in Nursing. McKayla is active in 4-H Club and church activities. In high school, she participated in swimming and archery and enjoys playing the guitar and drums. She is a member of the Black Hills State Student Advisory Board. McKayla is a State Qualifier in swimming and archery. In addition to receiving her high school diploma in May 2017, McKayla will also have completed a full year of college credits from Black Hills State University.

Miles Skillman was awarded the Sunrise-Sertoma Kevin Roth $1,500 scholarship from the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Miles plans to attend Southeast Technical Institute working towards his Associate Degree as a Early Childhood Specialist. Miles is a member of Teen/Tween Group in Action at South Dakota School for the Deaf. Miles volunteers at the Dale Animal Hospital, and mentors deaf elementary school students.

Sydny Nash-Fenner was the recipient of the Minnehaha Sertoma Club $2000 scholarship awarded by the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation. Sydny will be attending Chadron State College and plans on majoring in Criminal Justice or Nursing. Sydny has been involved in volleyball, marching band, church camps, C.H.A.N.G.E, Young Life, Jackrabbits Nursing Camp and Noon Optimist speech.

Hannah Higdon

Hannah Higdon of Dupree was awarded the Minnehaha Sertoma Club $2,000 scholarship. Hannah attends Northern State University majoring in Business and minoring in Agricultural Resources. Hannah would like to use her business degree to bring integrity back to her community and Tribe. She wants to pursue a career that will make a positive impact in others' lives. In high school, Hannah was active in school, church, and community volunteering as advisor for the Dream Team Cheerleading Club, Drama Club President, National Honor Society Vice President, Student Council member, Church Youth Group President, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Hannah has a strong passion for supporting good causes. In 2012, she was one of two South Dakotans to receive the President's Volunteer Service Award. Hannah was the valedictorian of her class and had the title of Regent Scholar.

Kristen Holmberg

Kristen Holmberg, of Gregory, was awarded the Kevin Roth $1500 scholarship. Kristen attends South Dakota State University pursuing a degree in nursing. In high school, Kristen participated in band, competitive cheer and dance, and sideline cheer. She was also involved in the online newspaper and Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America. She was an Honor Roll student and active in National Honor Society. Kristen volunteered many hours in her community.

Carissa Brandt, of Pierre, was awarded a $1,500 South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation scholarship. Carissa attends Presentation College with the goal to become a Medical Assistant. In high school, Carissa was involved in dance, basketball, softball, soccer, and Girl Scouts. Carissa was a manager for the Pierre volleyball and track teams. She also helped sandbag for her community during the flood of 2011. Carissa is a sincere and humble young lady who would render assistance to anyone in need.

Brennan Witt

The Minnehaha Sertoma Club $2,000 scholarship was awarded to Brennan Witt of Custer. Brennan plans to attend North Dakota State University. Brennan has not decided on a major, but wants to pursue a career that will make a positive impact in others' lives. Brennan has participated in service trips to Denver, New Orleans, and Washington, D.C. He has been active in school, church, and community volunteering at the local food bank, Outlaw Ranch church camp, Custer Youth House, in addition to excelling in basketball, cross country, and track.

Michael Janecek

The Kevin Roth $2,000 scholarship was awarded to Michael Janecek of Sioux Falls. Michael plans to attend Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. Michael has aspirations of becoming a physical therapist to support both deaf and hearing athletes with the goal of combining the two cultures to become one. Michael has participated in football, wrestling, basketball, and softball. Michael volunteered at the Deaf Club in Sioux Falls and worked for Communication Services for the Deaf lawn and snow removal services.

Jordan Thull, of Oldham, was awarded a $1,000 SDSD Foundation scholarship. Jordan plans to attend Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown this fall majoring in Agri-Business. Jordan has been very active volunteering at various church and community events. Jordan's achievements include Honor Roll, class president, Top Math student two years in a row, Youth snowmobiler of the Year, and All State football Academic Recipient his senior year. Jordan was active in basketball and football, jazz, pep, and marching band, choir, National Honor Society, and FFA.

Alyssa Bogue, of Beresford, was awarded a $1,000 SDSD Foundation scholarship. Alyssa plans to attend the University of South Dakota to pursue a double major in special education and elementary education. Alyssa knows from experience how a teacher can make a difference. Alyssa was involved in many school and community activities such as National Honor Society, FFA, Lincoln County Livestock 4-H Club and Junior Leaders. She volunteered at church, mentored elementary students, and delivered Meals on Wheels. Alyssa also participated in track, volleyball, concert and marching band, and choir.

Kieran Crain, of Watertown, was awarded a $1,000 SDSD Foundation scholarship. Kieran plans to attend Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown this fall majoring in Automotive Tech. Kieran made the Honor Roll every year of high school, achieved several awards in his Scout Troop including Eagle Scout, Historic Trails, and Board Sailing award. Kieran participated in concert and symphonic band and participated in Teens Against Tobacco & Alcohol. His community service activities include the Watertown Banquet, Zoo Crew Summers, Memorial Day Service Honor Guard, Karing Kapers, Troop Pancake Feed, and NRA Youth Day. Kieran was also active in his church CCD group and works for the Watertown Hy-Vee store.

Madison Tinklenberg, of Tea, was awarded a $1,000 SDSD Foundation Scholarship. Madison plans to attend the University of Sioux Falls to pursue a career centered on psychology and sociology. Her goal is to help people be healthier mentally, resulting in better physical health. Madison participated in her church youth group, school play, and choir. She worked on the school yearbook, volunteered at the Humane Society/Second Chance, served Thanksgiving dinner at the Banquet, and assists with the children's ministry for preschoolers at church.

Kristin Inman

The Minnehaha Sertoma Club $2,000 scholarship was awarded to Kristin Inman of Pierre. Kristin plans to attend Creighton University majoring in biology or biochemistry and minoring in music. Kristin has been a Student Senate officer, band drum major, Future Business Leaders of America participant, and Lady Governor's tennis squad member. Kristin plays six instruments, is a two-year All State Band member, and was twice selected as a member of the Augustana Honor Band.

The Kevin Roth $2,000 scholarship was awarded to Jaden Kellogg of Miller who plans on attending Lake Area Technical Institute. Jaden plans to attend Lake Area Technical Institute working toward an associate's degree in Dental Assisting. Jaden aspires to become a dental hygienist. Jaden was active in band, choir, show choir, church, 4-H, basketball, volleyball, track, golf, and the school play.

Cierra Hauf was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the SDSD Foundation. Cierra plans to attend the University of South Dakota to pursue a four year dental hygienist degree. In high school, Cierra was a member of the choir and competitive cheer squad. She also supervised and assisted younger students with homework and activities at the local before and after care school program.

Shelby Johnson was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the SDSD Foundation. Shelby plans to attend South Dakota State University to pursue a four year degree in Graphic Design. Shelby also received awards for Honor Roll and National Honor Society. Her extracurricular activities included Book Club, cross country, track/field, Deaf Teens in Action, and Manga/Anime Club.

Cody Martinz

Cody Martinz

Cody Martinz was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the SDSD Foundation. Cody plans to attend Jamestown College to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Management. In high school, he participated in basketball, lettered all four years, and was team captain senior year. Cody's community activities include mission trips to Denver and New Orleans, youth group fundraisers, DARE program activities, and volunteering at youth basketball and volleyball events.

Dustin Schmidt

Dustin Schmidt

Dustin Schmidt was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the SDSD Foundation. Dustin will attend Northern State University majoring in mathematics and chemistry and minoring in Music. Dustin has been involved in Special Olympics, Spanish Club, Band and Choir. He is also a member of a community-based show choir company called We Found Sound and is active in his church youth group.

Kale Smith

Kale Smith

Kale Smith was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the SDSD Foundation. Kale plans to attend South Dakota State University majoring in Physical Education and minoring in coaching cross country, track/field, and baseball. Kale participated in cross country, achieving MVP in track/field his freshman year and a long distance running award his junior year. He also participated in wrestling, baseball, SADD, and FFA. Kale was active in his church youth group and attended a Youth Gathering in New Orleans last summer.

Sierra Svatos

Sierra Svatos

Sierra Svatos of Lake Andes was the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from the SDSD Foundation. Sierra will attend Northeast Community College studying veterinarian technology and nursing. Sierra's goal is to be a full time rancher/farmer. She was very active in her school and community participating in volleyball, basketball, track/field, softball, All State chorus four years, FCCLA, National Honors Society, student council and church activities. Sierra also volunteered many hours assisting with community projects.
